Situation
Leicestershire’s educational landscape was undergoing transformational change as part of the Building Schools for the Future Pathfinder initiative.
As part of that, this sixth form college set out its ambition to embrace a highly sustainable agenda – a vision which encapsulated a progressive approach to post-16 education.
Project insight
Our consultation with both end-users and project partners made clear that traditional classroom-based models were a constraint for modern post-16 learners.
Our design therefore moved toward an interactive, university-style environment. This would stimulate group learning, cross-functional collaboration, and individual study equally. In this way, the college would align with the evolving needs of students and the demands of a 21st Century curriculum.
Project idea
Central to the concept was removing formal classroom spaces. Instead, a blend of open, flexible zones with technology-rich collaboration spaces, and settings for independent study were to be prioritised.
This approach enabled a more mature education experience, breaking down barriers between teachers and students. This in turn would facilitate the sharing of ideas across the sixth form.
Project design
The college’s open plan design maximises spatial flexibility, enabling learning to extend beyond traditional classrooms. Communal zones throughout the sixth form encourage collaboration and independent learning.
The deliberate adoption of a university-inspired layout prepares students as they transition towards higher education. It fosters maturity and autonomy into their learning approach.
Meanwhile technology is central: advanced teaching, social and circulation spaces are underpinned by robust digital infrastructure that meet both current and future needs. Our welcoming, contemporary architecture embodies the shared ambition to establish Melton Vale as a benchmark for educational innovation in Leicestershire.
“Redesigning our college along university lines has changed the approach of our building’s users. The resulting transformation in how our students now approach their learning has been remarkable. Our centre’s design has supported engagement, independence, and a genuine step-change in our learning culture.”
